Young Harris splits with Hurricanes

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.  |  Young Harris College split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader with Georgia Southwestern State University Sunday (April 7) afternoon at the YHC Softball Field.

The Hurricanes took the opener 7-0 before Lousia Disi tossed 5.1 innings of scoreless relief en route to a 4-3 victory in game two for the Mountain Lions. Young Harris improved to 26-16 overall and 7-5 in the PBC, while GSW fell to 23-19 and 7-5. The Mountain Lions hit the road Friday (April 12) for a 4 p.m. PBC doubleheader against Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia. 

The Hurricanes scored their only three runs of game two in the first inning after a two RBI double from Sarah Beth King and a single to center field from Lauren Kuerzi. 

Young Harris scored off a double steal in the bottom of the second that sent Kristan Lizardi to second base and scored Carly Rigsbee

Biz Walters scored the second run of the game for the Mountain Lions on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. Haylie SHope tied the game at three with a groundout to third base that scored Karah Straub

Shope hit the game-winning single to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored Morgan Curley

Disi (7-5) picked up the win for Young Harris as she allowed only one hit with 10 strikeouts in 5.1 innings of relief. 

Shope tallied one hit and two RBI, while Torres went 2-for-3 at the plate. Curley and Walters each had a hit and a run scored. 

Shannon Gibson (9-4) earned the loss for GSW as she allowed two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of relief. 

Aimee Oglesby put the Hurricanes on the board first in the second inning of game one with a two-run homer to center field. 

The Hurricanes added two runs in the fourth in three more in the fifth inning.

Maddie Green (0-1) earned the loss for YHC as she gave up four runs (one unearned) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.

Torres went 1-for-1 with two walks.

Gibson picked up the win for GSW as she threw a complete game shutout allowing only one hit with two walks and three strikeouts.
