YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Columbus State University swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from Young Harris College Saturday (April 6) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Cougars took the opener 6-2 before taking game two 7-6. Columbus State improved to 28-12 overall and 8-2 in the PBC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 25-15 and 6-4. Young Harris hosts Georgia Southwestern State University Sunday (April 7) in a 1 p.m. PBC doubleheader.
The Cougars struck first in game one after a bases-loaded Hannah Rose Corbin in the top of the second inning.
Biz Walters tied the game at one in the fourth for the Mountain Lions with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored
Kristan Lizardi.
Columbus State took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning with a two-run homer from Paris Poston. The Cougars added three more runs in the sixth inning.
Morgan Curley added the second run of the game for Young Harris in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to center field that scored
Karah Straub.
Darby Demarset (12-4) picked up the win for Columbus State as she gave up two runs on four hits with six walks and 10 strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Nikkie Kovalsky (18-9) earned the loss for the Mountain Lions as she gave up six runs on eight hits with nine walks and four strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Curley had one hit and a RBI, while Walters had one RBI.
Carly Rigsbee, Lizardi, and
Michalyn Bingham had one hit apiece.
Morgan Elston put the Cougars on the board in the second inning of game two with a two RBI single to left field.
Jill Torres gave Young Harris a 3-2 lead in the third with her team-leading eighth home run of the season to center field. Columbus State added two runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Rigsbee tied the game at four with a RBI single through the left side. Torres came around to score on an error after Lizardi hit an infield single to third base for a 5-4 lead.
The Cougars scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead.
Darby Demarset (13-4) earned her second win of the day as she allowed three hits with one walk and two strikeouts in two innings of scoreless relief.
Haylie Shope (0-1) earned the loss for Young Harris as she gave up two runs on three hits with one walk in 1.1 innings pitched.
Torres collected one hit, three RBI, and two runs scored. Rigsbee had one hit, one RBI, and a run scored, while Bingham tallied one hit and one RBI. Lizardi and Shope each had two hits. Curley went 3-for-5 with a run scored.
