YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Shorter University Wednesday (April 3) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.
Carly Rigsbee powered the Mountain Lions to a 14-6 victory through six innings in the opener before YHC took game two 9-2. Young Harris improved to 25-13, while the Hawks fell to 15-21. The Mountain Lions host Columbus State University Saturday (April 6) in a 1 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.
Jill Torres hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the first inning of game one to put YHC on the board. Rigsbee sent a three-run homer, her third of the season, over the fence in left center field for a 4-0 lead.
The Mountain Lions added two runs in the second inning and four more in the fourth that was capped off with a two-run homer from Rigsbee, her second of the game and fourth of the season, to left field.
Michalyn Bingham drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning to make it an 11-6 lead for Young Harris. After a two RBI single from
Morgan Curley,
Haylie Shope ended the game with a single down the left field line that scored Curley.
Nikkie Kovalsky (18-8) picked up the win for the Mountain Lions as she allowed six runs on eight hits with one strikeout in four innings pitched.
Rigsbee finished with two hits, five RBI, and two runs scored. Curley went 3-for-4 at the plate with two hits and four RBI.
Emily Harris had three hits and scored three runs. Shope had one hit and a RBI, while Torres and Bingham each had one hit, one RBI, and a run scored.
Grace Botti had one RBI.
Julie Sanderlin (3-8) earned the loss for Shorter as she gave up 13 runs (five earned) on 10 hits with five walks and two strikeouts in five innings pitched.
Young Harris struck first in game two, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Rigsbee, Bingham,
Biz Walters, Curley, Harris, and Shope each picked up a RBI in the inning.
Botti hit a solo home run, her fourth of the season, to left field in the sixth inning to make it an 8-2 lead for the Mountain Lions. Torres went back-to-back with Botti for her team-leading seventh homer of the season to left field.
Louisa Disi (6-5) picked up the win for YHC as she allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.
Curley, Harris, Shope, and Botti each collected one hit, one RBI, and one run scored. Walters had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored. Torres had one hit, one RBI, and scored two runs, while
Kristan Lizardi had one hit and scored one run. Bingham had one RBI and a run scored.
Jackie O'Reilly (0-4) earned the loss for the Hawks as she gave up seven unearned runs on two hits with four walks in 0.2 innings pitched.
