GREENWOOD, S.C. | Young Harris College swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Lander University Friday (April 26) evening at Doug Spears Field.
Young Harris took the opener 5-3 behind three RBI from
Emily Harris before taking game two 13-2 behind an eight run sixth inning. The Mountain Lions, who extended their winning streak to 11 games, improved to 36-16 overall and 15-5 in the PBC, while the Bearcats fell to 19-25 and 4-14. Young Harris returns to action in the PBC tournament starting Friday (May 3) in Dahlonega, Georgia.
Maddie Urquiola started the scoring in the fourth inning of game one with a RBI single that scored
Michalyn Bingham. Harris added two more runs with a two RBI single.
Haylie Shope concluded the four run inning with a double that scored Harris.
Harris made it a 5-1 game for YHC with a single that scored Urquiola. Lander scored two runs in the sixth inning to bring the score within two (5-3).
Nikkie Kovalsky (23-9) picked up the win for the Mountain Lions as she gave up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Harris went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Shope and Urquiola each had two hits and a RBI. Bingham collected two hits and a run scored.
Ashley Vinson (7-13) earned the loss for the Bearcats as she gave up five runs on 11 hits with two walks and five strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Shope made it a 4-0 game in the fifth inning of game two with a three-run homer to center field, her team-leading ninth of the season.
Jill Torres started the eight run sixth inning with a two RBI single.
Morgan Curley picked up two RBI in the inning, while Urquiola,
Katelynn Hodges, and
Kristan Lizardi each drove in a run. Hodges scored after Shope reached on an error by the shortstop to conclude the scoring.
Louisa Disi (12-5) picked up the win for YHC as she gave up two runs on four hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Shope collected a hit, three RBI, and two runs scored, while Harris went 4-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored. Lizardi and Curley each drove in two runs on two hits. Torres went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Hodges tallied three hits, one RBI, and two runs scored.
Abby Killian (11-10) earned the loss for Lander as she gave up five runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched.
