YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Nikkie Kovalsky and
Louisa Disi each threw a complete game shutout for Young Harris College in a sweep of the University of South Carolina-Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Tuesday (April 23) evening at the YHC Softball Field.
Kovalsky (22-9) allowed only three hits in an 8-0 victory in game one (six innings) before Disi struck out 10 in a 6-0 decision in the nightcap for the Mountain Lions. Young Harris improved to 34-16 overall and 13-5 in the PBC, while the Pacers fell to 21-27 and 3-15. The Mountain Lions travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, Friday (April 26) for a noon doubleheader against Lander University.
Young Harris recognized four seniors -
Grace Botti,
Kristan Lizardi, Disi, and Kovalsky - prior to the doubleheader.
Maddie Urquiola put the Mountain Lions on the board in the first inning of game one with a single to center that scored
Morgan Curley.
Emily Harris and
Haylie Shope each added a run in the second inning with RBI singles.
Jill Torres made it a 6-0 game for YHC with a two-run single up the middle in the sixth inning. The Mountain Lions ended the game with back-to-back RBI singles from
Michalyn Bingham and
Katelynn Hodges.
Kovalksy picked up the win for Young Harris as she threw a complete game shutout allowing only three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Torres and Bingham each collected two hits and two RBI. Harris went 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Lizardi had two hits and a run scored, while Urquiola had a hit, one RBI, and a run scored. Hodges had a hit and a RBI, while Botti tallied one hit.
Caroline Cockrell (12-12) earned the loss for the Pacers as she gave up eight runs (six earned) on 14 hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.
Shope started the scoring in the first inning of game two with a single to right field that scored Curley. Botti added the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Harris around to score. Shope scored after Lizardi reached on a fielding error to make it a 3-0 game for the Mountain Lions.
Shope tallied her second RBI of the game in the second inning with a single to right field. Young Harris picked up two more runs in the fifth inning.
Disi picked up the win for the Mountain Lions as she gave up three hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Shope went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Harris went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Botti and Curley each had a hit and a run scored. Hodges went 2-for-3.
Hannah Price (9-14) earned the loss for USC Aiken as she gave up six runs (three earned) on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings pitched.
