PEMBROKE, N.C. | Young Harris College swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from No. 40 University of North Carolina at Pemboke Saturday (March 2) afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 11-6 overall and to 4-2 in the Peach Belt after winning game one 11-6 and then taking the nightcap 8-2. The Braves fell to 7-9 and 1-7. The third game of the series will be played at 10 a.m. Sunday (March 3).
Young Harris jumped out to early leads in both games. The Mountain Lions, which had 15 hits - all singles - in the opener, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit. Young scored three times in the second - an RBI single from
Tucker Greer and a two-run single to right field from
Zavier Lushington - to open up a 5-2 lead.
The Mountain Lions scored twice in the fifth on an RBI single to center by
Tristin Smith and a bases-loaded walk by Greer. Young Harris opened up a 10-5 lead with three more runs in the eighth as they took advantage of two UNCP miscues. YHC added an insurance run in the ninth on a
Brett Hawkins single up the middle.
Greer, Hawkins, Lushington,
Dahlton Cash,
Cole Jackson and Smith each collected two hits in the victory. Greer, Lushington and Cash each drove in two runs.
Cameron Williams (4-1) earned the win as she struck out six in seven innings.
Young Harris got all the runs they needed in game two as they scored six runs in the top of the first.
Bailey Campbell had an RBI single before Cash drove in two with his double down the right field line. Jackson added a sacrifice fly and
Corley Reynolds drove in the final run with a ground out.
The Mountain Lions added two more runs in the fourth - an RBI double by Cash and Smith's single through the left side scored the other.
Dylan Gibeau (2-2) struck out 10 in six innings to earn the win, while
Tucker Daniel, who struck out four, earned the three-inning save for his first save of 2019.
Hawkins, Lushington, Campbell, Cash, and Smith had two hits apiece. Cash, who drove in three runs, had two doubles, while Smith and Jackson had one each.
