FLORENCE, S.C. | Young Harris College split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader with Francis Marion University Sunday (March 17) afternoon at the FMU Softball Stadium.
The Mountain Lions fell 2-1 in the opener before taking game two 2-1 over the Patriots. Young Harris improved to 17-9 overall and 3-1 in the PBC, while FMU fell to 17-10 and 1-3. The Mountain Lions host The University of Alabama in Huntsville Wednesday (March 20) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at E.D. Rivers Field.
Karah Straub came around to score after
Biz Walters reached on a fielding error to take a 1-0 lead in game two for Young Harris in the top of the fourth inning.
Kristan Lizardi made it a 2-0 game in the sixth inning with a RBI single up the middle.
The Patriots got one back in the bottom half of the inning with a bases-loaded walk by Danielle Karacson.
Nikkie Kovalsky (13-7) picked up the win for the Mountain Lions as she allowed one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts in five innings pitched. Lousia Disi picked up her first save of the season as she walked two and struck out three in two innings of scoreless relief.
Lizardi collected one hit and one RBI.
Morgan Curley had two hits and a run scored, while
Emily Harris,
Dara Moore, and
Carly Rigsbee each had two hits.
Janecia Hemingway (5-3) earned the loss for FMU as she gave up one unearned run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched.
The Patriots struck first in game one with a RBI single to right field by Jaimie Harney. Torres brought Young Harris within a run (2-1) in the top of the sixth with an infield single to second base that scored Lizardi.
Disi (3-2) earned the loss as she gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.
Torres went 2-for-3 at the plate with a RBI, while Curley collected two hits. Moore and Rigsbee each tallied one hit.
Katelyn Ellard (11-4) picked up the win for FMU as she gave up one run on six hits with five strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
