YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | No. 10 University of Alabama in Huntsville swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Young Harris College Wednesday (March 20) evening at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Chargers took game one 7-5 over eight innings before taking the nightcap 5-2. UAH improved to 24-7, while the Mountain Lions fell to 17-11. Young Harris hosts No. 1 University of North Georgia in a 1 p.m. Battle of Blood Mountain doubleheader Sunday (March 24).
The Chargers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one with a two-run homer to center field from Jada Hayes.
Maddie Urquiola put YHC on the board in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored
Karah Straub. UAH scored one run in the fourth and two in the seventh to take a 5-1 lead.
Carly Rigsbee tied the game at five for the Mountain Lions in the bottom half of the seventh inning with a grand slam, her first home run of the season, to left field.
Sydnee Uhlman (8-1) picked up the win for the Chargers as she allowed four runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts in three innings pitched. Layton Murphy earned her first save of the season as she had two strikeouts in one inning pitched.
Lousia Disi (3-3) earned the loss for Young Harris as she gave up seven runs (four earned) on seven hits with six walks and six strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched.
Rigsbee went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored. Urquiola tallied one RBI, while
Haylie Shope and
Morgan Curley collected two hits.
Emily Harris,
Kristan Lizardi, and
Jill Torres each had one hit.
Grace Botti put the Mountain Lions on the board in the fourth inning of game two with a single through the left side in the bottom of the third inning. Curley tied the game at two in the fourth inning with a single down the left field side. The Chargers scored three times in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.
Murphy (7-3) picked up the win for UAH as she gave up two runs on eight hits with five walks and five strikeouts in six innings pitched. Uhlman earned her first save of the season as she gave up one walk in one inning of scoreless relief.
Nikkie Kovalsky (13-8) earned the loss for Young Harris as she gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Botti and Curley each tallied one hit and one RBI, while
Biz Walters collected two hits. Curley, Harris, Rigsbee, Torres, and Urquiola each had one hit.
