YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College split a non-conference softball doubleheader with Lee University Wednesday (March 13) evening at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Mountain Lions took game one 8-4 after a game-winning grand slam from
Morgan Curley before dropping the nightcap 6-0. Young Harris improved to 14-8, while the Flames fell to 11-15. The Mountain Lions open up play in the Peach Belt Conference with a noon doubleheader Saturday (March 16) against the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in Pembroke, North Carolina.
Grace Botti opened the scoring in the third inning of the opener with a single to center field that scored
Emily Harris. Curley picked up her first RBI of the game in the fourth inning with a single up the middle to make it a 2-0 game for the Mountain Lions.
Jill Torres made it a 3-0 game for Young Harris in the fifth inning with a single to center field before
Biz Walters drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch for the 4-0 advantage.
The Flames picked up four runs in the sixth inning to tie the game.
Curley won the game for the Mountain Lions in the bottom of the seventh inning with a grand slam to right center, her first home run of the season.
Nikkie Kovalsky (11-7) picked up the win for YHC as she walked one in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Curley went 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBI and a run scored. Botti collected two hits and a RBI, while Torres had one hit and a RBI. Walters had one hit, one RBI, and a run scored, while Harris tallied two hits and a run scored.
Haylie Shope,
Maddie Urquiola, and
Kristan Lizardi each had one hit and a run scored.
Shonna Penny (3-9) earned the loss for Lee as she gave up eight runs (four earned) on 12 hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched.
The Flames struck first in game two with a sacrifice fly by Taylor De Adder in the first inning. Lee picked up three runs in the fourth inning with back-to-back homers from Bailey Church and Abby McKinney.
The Flames picked up two more in the sixth inning to take a 6-0 lead.
Kovalsky earned the loss for the Mountain Lions as she gave up four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
Harris tallied two hits while Botti, Torres, Lizardi, and
Katelynn Hodges each had one hit.
De Adder (5-5) picked up the win for Lee as she gave up six hits with eight walks and three strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
