BANNER ELK, N.C. | Young Harris College split a non-conference softball doubleheader with Lees-McRae College Monday (March 11) at the LMC Softball Field.
The Mountain Lions took the opener 8-0 over six innings before falling in game two 9-1 in five innings. Young Harris improved to 13-7 while the Bobcats fell to 6-6. Young Harris hosts Lee University in a 4 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday (March 13) at E.D. Rivers Field.
Jill Torres opened the scoring in the third inning of the opener with a single to right center field that scored
Emily Harris.
Dara Moore made it a 2-0 game for the Mountain Lions with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored
Haylie Shope.
Torres hit a two-run homer to left field in the fifth inning, her fifth of the season, to give Young Harris a 4-0 lead. Torres hit a grand slam to center field in the top of the sixth inning for her second homer of the day and sixth of the season to make it an 8-0 advantage for the Mountain Lions.
Nikkie Kovalsky (10-6) picked up the win for Young Harris as she allowed five hits and struck out 10 in six innings pitched.
Torres finished 3-for-4 with seven RBI and two runs scored. Torres's seven RBI is tied for third most in a game for YHC. Moore totaled one RBI, while
Morgan Curley,
Emily Harris, and
Kristan Lizardi had one hit each.
Skylar Edwards (1-3) earned the loss for the Bobcats as she gave up two runs (one earned) on one hit with four walks and two strikeouts in two innings pitched.
LMC started the scoring in game two with a bases clearing double from Julie Gast in the second inning. Kara Cunningham concluded the four run inning with a RBI single to right center. Gast added three more runs in the third inning for the Bobcats with her second bases clearing double.
Grace Botti brought in the only Mountain Lion run of the game with a double down the left field line. LMC put up two more runs in the fifth inning to conclude the scoring.
Kovalsky earned the loss as she gave up four runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout in 1.2 innings pitched.
Botti had one hit and a RBI, while Moore and
Katelynn Hodges had one hit each.
Cunningham (3-3) earned the win for the Bobcats as she gave up one run on three hits with six walks and three strikeouts in five innings pitched.
