HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Young Harris College defeated the University of Missouri - St. Louis 9-1 in five innings before defeating the University of West Alabama 3-2 Saturday (Feb. 9) afternoon at the Charger Chillout.
The No. 13 Mountain Lions improved to 6-2, while the Tritons fell to 0-3 and the Tigers fell to 4-5. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Feb. 16) on the road in Tigerville, South Carolina, as they face North Greenville University in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
UMSL started the scoring in the top of the first inning after Morgan Hill came around to score on an error.
Dara Moore tied the game at one in the bottom of the first for the Mountain Lions with a single up the middle that scored
Emily Harris.
Morgan Curley started an eight run fourth inning with a two RBI single to center field. Moore and
Grace Botti added bases-loaded walks.
Jill Torres hit a grand slam over the fence in left center field for her first homer of the season.
Louisa Disi (1-0) picked up her first win of the season for Young Harris as she allowed one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched.
Torres went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI, while Moore had a hit and two RBI. Curley went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
Michalyn Bingham went 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Mimi Bradley (0-2) earned the loss for the Tritons as she gave up five runs on eight hits with three walks in 3.2 innings pitched.
West Alabama opened up the scoring in the second game of the day with an infield single by Hayes Fulford in the first inning.
The Mountain Lions answered back in the bottom half of the first with a single to right field by
Maddie Urquiola that scored
Carly Rigsbee. Harris gave Young Harris a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second with a single through the left side that scored
Karah Straub.
The Tigers tied the game in the fifth inning after Kacy Noland hit a RBI single to left field.
Curley scored the winning run for Young Harris after a sacrifice fly from Rigsbee.
Nikkie Kovalsky (4-2) picked up her third win of the weekend for the Mountain Lions with a complete game allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Curley went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Harris and Urquiola each collected a hit and one RBI. Rigsbee tallied one RBI.
Nora Keehn (1-2) earned the loss for West Alabama as she allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts in six innings pitched.
