TIGERVILLE, S.C. | Young Harris College split a non-conference softball doubleheader with North Greenville University Saturday (Feb. 16) afternoon at Jan McDonald Field.
The Crusaders won the opener 8-4 before the Mountain Lions took game two 10-2 through six innings. Young Harris improved to 7-3, while North Greenville fell to 4-7. The Mountain Lions return to action Wednesday (Feb. 20) on the road in Franklin Springs, Georgia, as they take on Emmanuel (Ga.) College in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
North Greenville struck first in game two with a bunt single by Claire Gilmo that scored Brooklyn Stone. The Mountain Lions put up four runs in the second inning with bases-loaded walks by
Kristan Lizardi and
Morgan Curley and RBI singles from
Emily Harris and
Haylie Shope.
Shope picked up her second RBI in the fourth inning with a single that scored Lizardi to give Young Harris a 5-1 lead.
Michalyn Bingham made it a 6-1 game in the fifth with a triple to left field that scored
Grace Botti.
The Mountain Lions picked up four more runs in the sixth inning that started with a two RBI double by Shope.
Nikkie Kovalsky (5-3) picked up the win for Young Harris as she allowed two runs on 11 hits with one walk and one strikeout in six innings pitched.
Shope went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored. Harris collected three hits, one RBI, and a run scored. Bingham tallied two hits and two RBI, while Curley, Torres, and Lizardi each had one RBI.
Jaelin Griffin (3-4) earned the loss for the Crusaders as she gave up four runs on three hits with five walks and one strikeout in one inning pitched.
North Greenville put up eight runs over the first four innings of game one to take an 8-0 lead.
Jill Torres put the Mountain Lions on the board in the fifth inning with a two-run homer to left field, her second of the season. Torres and
Dara Moore had back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the sixth inning to push across two more runs for Young Harris.
Kovalsky earned the loss for the Mountain Lions as she gave up four runs on two hits with five walks and one strikeout in 2.1 innings pitched.
Torres collected one hit, three RBI, and one run scored. Moore tallied one RBI, while Harris had two hits. Shope and Botti each had one hit.
Jaelin Griffin (3-3) picked up the win for the Crusaders as she allowed two runs on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts over five innings.
