HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Nikkie Kovalsky threw two complete games for Young Harris College as they defeated No. 1 University of Southern Indiana 5-1 and Trevecca Nazarene University 3-0 in the first day of the Charger Chillout softball tournament.
The No. 13 Mountain Lions improved to 4-2, while the Screaming Eagles and Trojans both fell to 0-1. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Feb. 9) in day two of the Charger Chillout with an 11 a.m. CT matchup against University of Missouri-St. Louis and a 1 p.m. CT contest against the University of West Alabama.
Southern Indiana opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning after a RBI triple by Claire Johnson that scored Julianne Bell.
The Mountain Lions tied the game at one in the bottom of the fifth inning after
Morgan Curley came around to score on an error.
Haylie Shope drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to give Young Harris a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jill Torres added another run with a bases-loaded walk.
Carly Rigsbee made it a 5-1 lead with a single to left field that scored Shope and Curley.
Kovalsky (3-2) picked up the win for the Mountain Lions as she threw a complete game with six hits, one earned run, and 10 strikeouts.
Rigsbee went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while Torres and Shope each had one RBI.
Jennifer Leonhardt (0-1) suffered the loss for the Screaming Eagles as she allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits with eight walks and seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.
Rigsbee put Young Harris on the board in the bottom of the third inning in game two with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. Urquiola added two more in the third with a double to right field that scored Rigsbee and Shope.
Kovalsky picked up her second with of the day with a complete game allowing nine hits with six strikeouts.
Urquiola tallied one hit and two RBI, while
Kristan Lizardi and
Grace Botti had one hit each.
Savannah Carr (0-1) earned the loss for the Trojans as she gave up three unearned runs on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts in four innings pitched.
