Seth McCoy helped lead Young Harris College to a 110-92 Peach Belt Conference men's basketball victory Wednesday (Feb. 13) evening over its cross-mountain rival University of North Georgia.
The Mountain Lions swept the season series with the Nighthawks as they improved to 11-12 overall and 9-8 inside the league, while the Nighthawks fell to 8-14 and 3-13. Young Harris will host No. 21 University of North Carolina at Pembroke Saturday (Feb. 16) at 3:30 p.m. at the YHC Basketball Arena.
Harper finished with 25 points, five assists and five rebounds, while McCoy tallied 20 points.
North Georgia jumped out to a 28-10 lead after Jack Howard hit a three-pointer with 14:15 left in the first half. Young Harris gradually whittled down the deficit until the Mountain Lions tied the game at 41 after Harper sank a three-pointer with 3:25 left before halftime. Young Harris scored the final seven points - five from Harper and a layup from McCoy - of the half to take a 53-49 lead at the intermission.
The game remained close in the second half until the Mountain Lions put together a 14-3 run to open up a commanding 96-82 lead after a steal by
Paul Miller set up a
Justin Jones three-pointer with 5:23 remaining in the contest. Jones and McCoy each scored five points during the decisive run. The closest the Nighthawks would get the rest of the way was 10 points.
Young Harris shot 58.1 percent (36-of-62) from the floor, including 46.5 percent (15-of-33) from long distance.
Ryle Owens scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor, while Miller also scored 18 points as he was perfect (7-of-7) from the field. Jones finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while
Nicksen Blanc added 11 points.
Howard led the Nighthawks with 23 points. Shawn Hopkins added 15 points, while Zezemon Steeple (14), Zach Cottrell (10) and De'Undra Singleton (10) also finished in double figures.
