Mountain Lions tame Bears 76-48 to ring out 2019

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Sarah Woghiren, Niaya White, Carly Winters combined to score 41 points as the Young Harris College women's basketball team rang out 2019 with a 76-48 non-conference victory over Truett McConnell University Tuesday (Dec. 31) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions improved to 6-4, while the Bears fell to 7-5. Young Harris returns to Peach Belt Conference action Saturday when they host the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in a 1:30 p.m. contest Saturday (Jan. 4).

Young Harris, which led for all but 87 seconds, took command of the game in the second and third quarters where they outscored the Bears 44-19. The Mountain Lions, which led 15-12 after the opening 10 minutes, used a 10-3 run at the start of the second quarter to take a 25-15 lead after a fast break layup by Woghiren with 7:16 left. YHC extended its lead to many as 19 points (39-20) on a Winters fast break jumper with 45 seconds before the half. 

The Mountain Lions kept their foot on the pedal in the third quarter as YHC pushed the led to as many as 28 points (57-29) on two free throws by White with 2:55 left in the period.  YHC took its largest led - 30 points (63-33) - on a Mackenzie Johnson putback with 7:58 left in the game.

The Mountain Lions outrebounded Truett McConnell 56-23, including a 27-6 margin on the offensive glass. YHC outscored Truett-McConnell 27-1 on second-chance points and held a 38-20 margin in the paint.

Woghiren led Young Harris with a double double - 15 points and 12 rebounds, while White had 14 points and five rebounds. Winters, who sank four three-pointers, finished with 12 points. Johnson and Samantha Russell each contributed eight points, while Johnson and Kalen Surles each grabbed six rebounds.

Sierra Kendall and Re'tavia Floyd led the Bears with 15 points each.
