Lakers get past Mountain Lions 3-1

MORROW, Ga. | Manoly Baquerizo scored two goals to lead Clayton State University to a 3-1 Peach Belt Conference women's soccer victory over Young Harris College Saturday (Nov. 2) afternoon at Laker Field.

The Lakers improved to 7-5-1 overall and to 4-4-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-9-0 and 5-5-0. Young Harris will wrap up its regular season schedule Friday (Nov. 8) when they host the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in a 1 p.m. PBC contest at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a Natalie Barbara goal, her second of the year.

The Mountain Lions notted the score at 1 14 minutes later on a Bianey Serrano goal. Eline Sand collected the ball on the right side and sent the ball across the goal mouth to Serrano, who put it in the left corner of the net for her second goal of 2019.

Baquerizo helped the Lakers retake the lead 2-1 four minutes later. Baquerizo added an insurance goal at 54:31 mark to extend Clayton State's lead to 3-1. It was Baquerizo's sixth goal of the season. 

Clayton State held a 19-7 margin on shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Pien Van Kampen registered eight saves for the Mountain Lions, while Valentina Bonaluto had two for the Lakers.
