lGREENEVILLE, Tenn. | Dillon Smith's 25-foot three-pointer from the top of the key with 11 seconds left gave Tusculum University a 74-73 come-from-behind victory over Young Harris College in a non-conference men's basketball game at Pioneer Arena Wednesday (Nov. 13) evening.
The Pioneers improved to 3-0, while the Mountain Lions fell to 0-3. Young Harris will return to action Saturday (Nov. 16) when they travel to Belmont, North Carolina, for a 4 p.m. contest against Belmont Abbey College.
The Mountain Lions led for nearly 37 minutes and held the Pioneers to 32.9 percent (24-of-73) shooting, but Smith, who missed his first 11 attempts, swished the long-range three-pointer to give Tusculum a 74-73 lead. Young Harris had a chance to win the game in regulation, but
Alphonso Willis' jumper fell short as time expired.Â
Young Harris shot 64 percent (16-of-25) from the field in the first half, including a scintillating 77 percent (10-of-13) from three-point range as the jumped out to a 45-34 lead at the half. The Mountain Lions, who went the last 6:20 of the game without a field goal, lead by six points (70-64) after
Ryle Owens sank two free throws with five minutes left. The Pioneers tied the game at 70 on Brandon Mitchell's dunk with 2:25 to go.
Tusculum took a 71-70 lead after Caleb Hodnett hit the first of three free throws with 80 seconds left.
Jacorie Archie was fouled and sank two free throws to give the Mountain Lions the lead back at 72-71. Tusculum had the chance to regain the lead on its next two positions, but turned the ball over twice.
Brian Harper hit the first of two free throws to extend the YHC lead to 73-71 with 18 seconds left before Smith's winning shot.
Trenton Gibson led Tusculum with 24 points and seven rebounds, while Brandon Mitchell had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Tariq Jenkins and Hodnett each tallied 11 points, while Hodnett added seven rebounds.
Owens led YHC with 17 points, while
Seth McCoy added 12 more.
Miki Tadic added nine points, while Willis and Archie each posted eight. Â
