YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College recorded a 3-1 Peach Belt Conference women's soccer victory over Lander University Saturday (Oct. 12) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 3-2-0 in the Peach Belt and to 4-6-0 overall, while the Bearcats fell to 2-1-2 and 4-4-2. Young Harris returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 19) when they travel to Americus, Georgia, for a 7 p.m. PBC contest against Georgia Southwestern State University.
Young Harris jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first half with goals two minutes apart. The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute on
Aimee Durn's third strike of the year. Durn's goal was assisted by
Hannah Behner, who sent the ball into the box off her corner kick from the right side.Â
The Mountain Lions wasted little time for their next brace.
Eduarda Chagas' initial shot was blocked in the box and the deflection went to
Payton Putzer, who knocked it into the right corner of the net to give YHC a 2-0 lead at the 29:05 mark.
Lander got a goal back in the 61st minute on a Haleigh Bollig penalty kick, which was set up when teammate Lauren Brosonski was fouled in the box.
Young Harris got an insurance goal at the 84:16 mark when
Anika Elias crossed the ball into the box to Chagas, who buried the ball in the right corner for her second goal of 2019.
Young Harris held a 14-2 advantage on shots (6-2 on goal) and 4-3 edge on corner kicks. Sarah Owen recorded three saves for Lander, while
Pien Van Kampen had one stop for the Mountain Lions.
