YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Haylie Shope hit her team leading eighth home run of the year for Young Harris College en route of a 4-3 Peach Belt Conference victory in the opener over No. 2 University of North Georgia before falling 8-4 in game two of the Battle of Blood Mountain softball doubleheader Sunday (April 8) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 26-13 overall and 8-4 in the Peach Belt, while the Nighthawks fell to 43-2 and 11-1. Young Harris snapped North Georgia's 19-game win streak with its victory in the opener. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (April 14) on the road in Columbus, Georgia, to take on Columbus State University in a 2 p.m. PBC doubleheader.
North Georgia jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one with a bases-clearing double by Alishia Frierson.
The Mountain Lions got two back in the third inning off of Shope's two-run homer to center field.
Georgia Webb tied the game at 3 for Young Harris in the bottom of the fifth inning with a double to right center that scored
Hannah Harrison.
Jill Torres drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to bring in the go ahead run for the Mountain Lions.
Dharma Rosbrugh retired the last four batters to secure the victory for Young Harris to earn her first save of the season as she struck out one batter.
Louise Disi (4-2) picked up the win for the Mountain Lions as she allowed three runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.
Shope finished with two hits, two RBI, and a run scored. Webb went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Harrison finished with one hit and two RBI,
Emily Harris had one hit, and Torres tallied one RBI.
Kylee Smith (22-1) earned her first loss of the season for the Nighthawks as she allowed four runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts in four innings pitched.
The Mountain Lions struck first in game two that started with a RBI double to left center by Torres in the bottom of the second inning.
Kristan Lizardi added the second run of the inning with a bloop double to shallow left field that scored Torres.
North Georgia scored four runs in the both the third and seventh innings to take an 8-2 lead.
Lizardi scored in the bottom of the seventh inning for Young Harris after Harris reached on a bunt single to third base. Harris came around to score on a ground out to third base by Harrison.
Amber Johns (15-0) picked up the win for the Nighthawks as she allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Rosbrugh (17-9) earned the loss for the Mountain Lions as she allowed eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits with five walks and one strikeout in seven innings pitched.
Lizardi went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Harris finished with two hits and one run scored. Harrison tallied one hit and a RBI,
Murphy Davis collected one hit and a run scored. Torres had one hit, one RBI, and one run scored while Webb had one hit.
