Young Harris powers past Braves in doubleheader sweep

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.  |  Young Harris College connected on four home runs on the day en route of a 7-1 victory over the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in the opener before taking game two 9-1 in five innings in a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Thursday (April 12) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field. 

The Mountain Lions improved to 28-13 overall and 10-4 in the PBC, while the Braves fell to 22-16 and 2-10. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (April 14) on the road in Columbus, Georgia with a 2 p.m. PBC doubleheader against Columbus State University. 

Georgia Webb put the Mountain Lions on the board in the bottom of the first inning of the opener with a single through the right side that scored Emily Harris

Toni Nelson led off the second inning with a solo home run to left field to even the score at one for UNCP. 

Harris gave Young Harris the lead in the bottom half of the second with a single to right center that scored Kristan Lizardi

The Mountain Lions added three more runs in the third inning that started with a double down the left field line by Grace Botti that scored Murphy Davis. Sara Alderman collected two RBI on a bloop single to shallow right field that allowed Botti and Hannah Emerson to score. 

Botti hit her fourth home run of the season to straight away center field in the bottom of the fifth inning for Young Harris. Later in the inning, Alderman hit a solo homer over the fence in left field - her third of the season - to give the Mountain Lions a 7-1 advantage. 

Haylie Shope (1-0) picked up her first win of the season for the Mountain Lions as she allowed one hit with two walks and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. 

Alderman went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored. Botti finished with two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. Harris went 3-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored. Davis and Lizardi each finished with one hit and a run scored. Webb had one hit and one RBI.

Malerie Leviner (8-7) earned the loss for the Braves as she allowed seven runs on 11 hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. 

Davis drew a bases loaded walk to score the first run of the game for Young Harris in the first inning of game two. 

The Mountain Lions tallied four runs in the second inning that started with a double through the left side by Harris that scored Lizardi. Hannah Harrison hit her first triple of the season to left center that scored Harris. Webb concluded the four run inning with a two run homer to center field, her fourth of the season. 

Young Harris added two more in the third inning with a RBI single by Harris and a bases loaded walk by Harrison. 

Harrison ended the game for the Mountain Lions in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two run homer of the right field fence, her eighth of the season. 

Dharma Rosbrugh (18-9) picked up the win for Young Harris as she allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts in five innings pitched.

Harrison went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Harris had three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. Webb finished with two hits, two RBI, and a run scored while Lizardi had one hit and two runs scored.

Raygan Larson (6-6) earned the loss for UNCP as she allowed five runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout in two innings pitched.
