Bearcats take pair from Young Harris

GREENWOOD, S.C.  |  Young Harris College fell to Lander University 9-1 in six innings in the opener and 2-1 in game two of the Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Saturday (April 21) evening at Dough Spears Field. 

The Bearcats improved to 29-17 overall and 9-9 in the PBC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 32-17 and 13-7. Young Harris returns to action Tuesday (April 24) in Rome, Georgia, for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against Shorter University. 

Lander struck in the first inning of game one after Kelli McCormack hit a RBI single to score Casey Wooten. McCormack later stole home to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead.

Georgia Webb hit a RBI single that scored Kristan Lizardi for the Mountain Lions to cut the lead to one (2-1). 

The Bearcats scored six runs in the fourth inning to take a 8-1 lead. Chandler Carey ended the game with a RBI single that scored McCormack. 

McKenzi Ferguson (19-7) picked up the win for Lander as she gave up one run on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Haylie Shope (3-1) earned the loss for Young Harris as she gave up two runs on one hit with two walks in 0.1 innings pitched. 

Webb went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Emily Harris collected two hits while Hannah Harrison and Sara Alderman had one hit each. Lizardi tallied one hit and a run scored. 

Brianna Surrento put the Bearcats on the board in the fourth inning of game two with a RBI single that scored McCormack. 

Lander added the second run of the game in the sixth inning after a single by Alana Frye.

Harrison hit her ninth home run of the season in the in the top of the seventh inning for the Mountain Lions. 

Ashley Vinson (5-1) picked up the win for the Bearcats as she allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts in six innings pitched. Ferguson earned her second save as she allowed one hit in one inning pitched.

Louise Disi (4-4) earned the loss for Young Harris as she allowed one run on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched.

Harrison went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and a run scored. Shope and Lizardi each collected one hit.
