Young Harris splits doubleheader with Eagles

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.  |  Young Harris College split a non-conference softball doubleheader with Carson Newman University Wednesday (April 18) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field. 

Sara Alderman and Murphy Davis each drove in three runs for the Mountain Lions as they won the opener 9-1 in five innings before dropping the second game 5-2. 

Young Harris improved to 32-14 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 27-18. The Mountain Lions return to action with a 3 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader in Greenwood, South Carolina, against Lander University. 

Young Harris debuted at No. 6 in the Southeast region in the first softball regional ranking. 

The Mountain Lions struck first in the opener that started with a sacrifice fly to right field by Davis in the first inning. Jill Torres and Alderman drew bases-loaded walks in the inning to give Young Harris a 3-0 lead. 

Carson Newman got one back in the third inning with a RBI single up the middle by Katie Pritchett. 

Torres added another run for the Mountain Lions in the fourth inning with a single to right field that scored Georgia Webb. Alderman drove in two more runs in the inning with a two-run single to center field. 

Hannah Harrison doubled to right center that allowed Emily Harris to score from first base in the bottom of the fifth inning for Young Harris. Davis ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run double to left center.

Haylie Shope (3-0) picked up the win for the Mountain Lions as she allowed one run on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts in five innings pitched. 

Davis collected two hits, three RBI, and a run scored while Alderman ahd one hit and three RBI. Torres tallied one hit and two RBI and Harrison had two hits, one RBI and two runs scored. Webb had one hit and two runs scored while Harris had one hit and a run scored. 

Lacie Rinus (17-11) earned the loss for the Eagles as she gave up three runs on one hit with five walks in 0.2 innings pitched. 

Carson Newman started the scoring in game two with a RBI single by Haley Caldwell in the first inning. The Eagles plated two runs in the second and third innings. 

Kristan Lizardi put Young Harris on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single up the middle that scored Torres. Harris reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop that allowed Alderman to score. 

Dharma Rosbrugh (20-10) earned the loss for the Mountain Lions as she allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched. 

Lizardi and Harris each had one hit and a RBI. Torres had two hits and a run scored while Webb collected two hits. Alderman had one hit and a run scored.

Lacie Rinus (18-11) picked up the complete game victory as she allowed two runs on nine hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.
