YHC uses six-run eighth for 11-5 win over Trojans

ANDERSON, S.C. | Young Harris College used a six-run eighth inning to record an 11-5 non-conference baseball victory over Anderson (S.C.) University Wednesday (April 18) evening at Memorial Stadium.

The Mountain Lions improved to 24-20 overall, while the Trojans fell to 20-25. Young Harris returns to Zell B. Miller Field Friday (April 20) to open up a three-game Peach Belt Conference series against No. 7 Columbus State University. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

With the game tied at 5, the Mountain Lions converted an Anderson error in the eighth inning to score five unearned runs. Royce Woolfolk gave Young Harris the lead for good at 6-5 with a bunt single that scored Cory Ewald, who started the rally with a leadoff walk off Trojan reliever Justin Helms (0-1). The Mountain Lions pushed another run across on a double play before Logan Worley doubled home Woolfolk to give YHC a 8-5 lead. Tyler Washington stroked an RBI triple down the left field line and Jackson Jones added a two-run homer to right field to give the Mountain Lions an 11-5 lead. It was Jones' sixth homer of the season.

The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Rudy Gaona singled through the right side to drive in the first run, while Washington later scored as part of a double steal.

Anderson got a run back in the second before Washington smashed a homer - his third of 2018 - to center field an inning later to take a 3-1 lead. The Trojans tied the game at 3 with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Young Harris scratched across two runs in the fifth to open a 5-3 lead. Gaona laced a RBI triple to center before Ewald drove in another run with a single back up the middle. Anderson would tie the game at 5 with two runs in the sixth inning.

Dylan Gibeau (4-2) earned the win in relief as he struck out two in his inning of work.

The Mountain Lions collected 17 hits, including seven for extra bases, in the win. Gaona led the way with four hits. Worley and Washington each had three hits, while Reynolds and Tristin Smith had two each.
