Young Harris blows past Hurricanes in doubleheader sweep

AMERICUS, Ga.  |  Young Harris College combined for 25 runs and 32 hits on the day as they defeated Georgia Southwestern State University 17-2 in five innings in the opener and 8-2 in game two of a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Monday (April 16) afternoon at Lady Canes Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 31-14 overall and 13-5 in the PBC, while the Hurricanes fell to 18-29 and 7-11. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (April 18) as they host Carson-Newman University in a 1 p.m. non-conference contest at E.D. Rivers Field. 

The Mountain Lions jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one after a three-run single off the fence in right-center field by Jill Torres

Murphy Davis made it a 8-1 advantage for Young Harris with a grand slam to left center field, her third home run of the season. 

The Mountain Lions added four more runs in the third inning and five in the fourth inning. 

Dharma Rosbrugh (19-9) picked up the win for Young Harris as she allowed one run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief. 

Davis collected two hits, five RBI, and two runs scored. Torres had two hits and four RBI. Hannah Harrison went 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Emily Harris, who was named the Peach Belt's Freshman of the Week earlier in the day, tallied three hits, two RBI, and three runs scored. 

Madason Messer (8-7) earned the loss for Georgia Southwestern as she gave up four runs on five hits in 0.2 innings pitched. 

Grace Botti started the scoring in game two for the Mountain Lions as she hit her fifth home run of the season over the left field fence. Sara Alderman made it a 3-0 lead with a two-run homer to left center, her fourth of the season. 

The Hurricanes scored once in the third and fourth innings to make it a 3-2 game. 

Young Harris tallied five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 8-2 lead. 

Rosbrugh (20-9) picked up her second win of the day for the Mountain Lions as she allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Alderman went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Harrison collected three hits and one RBI and Kelsey Nix had two hits and one RBI. Harris went 3-for-5 with a run scored and Botti had one hit, one RBI, and two runs scored. 

Shannon Gibson (4-6) earned the loss for Georgia Southwestern as she gave up eight runs (five earned) on 16 hits with three strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
