COLUMBUS, Ga. | Haylie Shope and
Jill Torres each homered and drove in five runs for Young Harris College as they won game two 17-4 in five innings over Columbus State University after dropping the opener 7-0 in a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Saturday (April 14) afternoon at Cougar Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 29-14 overall and 11-5 in the PBC, while the Cougars fell to 27-16 and 10-4. Young Harris returns to action Sunday (April 15) in Americus, Georgia, with a 2 p.m. PBC doubleheader against Georgia Southwestern State University.
The Mountain Lions started game two with six straight singles that led to three runs scored. After
Grace Botti drew a bases-loaded walk, Torres hit a two-run double to right center to give Young Harris a 6-0 lead in the first inning.
Sara Alderman recorded a RBI single and
Hannah Harrison drew another bases-loaded walk for the Mountain Lions to bring the score to 8-0.
Young Harris scored eight runs in the first inning before recording an out. Shope concluded the 12-run first inning for the Mountain Lions with a grand slam to left center, her team leading ninth home run of the season.
Botti collected two more RBI for Young Harris after a double down the left field line in the top of the third inning. Torres made it a 17-0 advantage with a three-run homer over the left field fence, her fifth of the season.
Columbus State plated two runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth and fifth innings.
Shope (2-0) picked up the win for the Mountain Lions as she gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits with three walks in three innings pitched.
Shope collected two hits, five RBI, and three runs scored while Torres had two hits, five RBI, and two runs scored. Botti tallied one hit, three RBI, and scored two runs. Harrison went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored.
Murphy Davis and
Kristan Lizardi each tallied two hits, one RBI, and two runs scored. Alderman finished with two hits and one RBI.
Georgia Webb had one hit and two runs scored while
Emily Harris had two hits and two runs scored.
Peyton Sorrells (11-4) earned the loss for the Cougars as she allowed six runs on six hits without recording an out.
Columbus State struck first in game one with a single to right field by Elizabeth Perdue in the first inning. The Cougars added another run in the fourth inning off a solo homer by Kirstin Reynolds. Columbus State scored twice in the fifth inning and three more times in the sixth inning.
Louise Disi (4-3) earned the loss for Young Harris as she allowed four runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts in four innings pitched.
Webb and Davis collected one hit apiece.
Darby Demarest (12-8) picked up the win for the Cougars as she gave up two hits with seven walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
