YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Wingate University Saturday (March 3) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Mountain Lions took the first game 9-3 before taking game two 5-1.
Young Harris improved to 13-6 on the season while Wingate fell to 6-14. The Mountain Lions return to action Sunday (March 4) as they host King (Tenn.) University in a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Bulldogs jumped to an early third inning lead (2-1) after an infield single by Rebekah Woods that scored Aubrey Reep.
Murphy Davis gave Young Harris the lead in the bottom of the fourth (3-2) with a two RBI double to right field that plated
Madison Urquiola and
Sara Alderman.
Emily Harris added to the lead with a sacrifice bunt which allowed
Kristan Lizardi to score.
The Mountain Lions scored three more times in the bottom of the fifth inning that started with
Hannah Harrison reaching on a fielding error that allowed
Georgia Webb to score. Harrison and
Jill Torres came around to score after Davis reach on a fielding error giving Young Harris a 7-2 lead.
Haylie Shope extended the Mountain Lion with a two-run homer in the sixth inning, her third of the season.
Kennedy Kotula (5-2) picked up the complete-game victory for Young Harris as she allowed three runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Davis finished with one hit and three RBI while Shope tallied one hit, one run scored and two RBI. Harris collected one hit, one run scored, and one RBI. Webb, Harrison,
Grace Botti, and Lizardi each had one hit apiece.
Reep (5-6) earned the loss for Wingate as she allowed nine runs (six earned) on nine hits with eight walks and three strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Reep put the Bulldogs on the board first in the top half of the first inning in game two with a single to left center that scored Naomi Sapp.
Webb tied the game in the bottom of the first for the Mountain Lions with a single to left field that scored Harris.
Harrison gave Young Harris the lead with a double to center field that scored Webb and Shope.
The Mountain Lions scored two more in the bottom of the second inning off a two RBI single by Webb that allowed Harris and Lizardi to score.
Dharma Rosbrugh (7-3) earned the complete game win for Young Harris as she allowed one run one seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Webb went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored. Harrison collected two hits and two RBI while Davis, Urquiola, and Lizardi each tallied one hit.
Sam Hogan (1-5) took the loss for the Bulldogs as she gave up five runs (two earned) on eight hits with three walks in six innings pitched.
