CLEVELAND, Tenn. | Lee University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Young Harris College Wednesday (March 21) afternoon at Butler Field.
The Flames took the opener 5-1 behind a complete game by Leigh Beatenbough before taking game two 4-3 off a game-winning single by Beatenbough.
Lee improved to 16-16, while the Mountain Lions fell to 19-10. Young Harris returns to action Friday (March 23) as they host Georgia College in a 3 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at E.D. Rivers Field.
The Mountain Lions struck first in game one with a
Haylie Shope sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the third inning that scored
Madison Urquiola.
Sam Hill tied the game in the bottom half of the third for Lee after she scored on a wild pitch. Taylor Moran gave the Flames a 2-1 lead later in the inning with a single up the middle that scored Lily Hatcher.
Abby McKinney drove in three more for Lee in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer.
Beatenbough (6-6) picked up the win for the Flames as she allowed one run on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Dharma Rosbrugh (13-5) earned the loss for Young Harris as she allowed five runs on eight hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in five innings pitched.
Shope tallied one RBI while Urquiola had one hit and one run scored.
Murphy Davis and
Emily Harris each collected one hit.
Grace Botti started the scoring in game two for the Mountain Lions with a two-run double to right field in the first inning that scored Shope and Harris.
Moran put Lee on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a single up the middle that scored Hatcher.
Botti made it a 3-1 Young Harris lead in the sixth inning with a RBI single up the middle that scored
Hannah Harrison.
Brooklynn Frazier in a solo home run to center field in the bottom half of the sixth for the Flames to cut the lead to one (3-2).
Bailey Church tied the game at three for Lee in the bottom of the seventh inning with a single to right field. Beatenbough hit the game-ending single to right field that scored Hatcher.
Shonna Penney (7-6) earned the victory for the Flames as she allowed three runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Rosbrugh (13-6) took the loss for the Mountain Lions as she allowed two runs on two hits with three walks in 1.2 innings of relief.
Botti went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Harrison went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Davis collected one hit while Harris and Shope each tallied one hit and a run scored.
