GULF SHORES, Ala. | The Young Harris College softball team opened their season at the Gulf Shores Invitational Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon at Sportsplex Stadium.
The Mountain Lions fell to Delta State University 4-3 in eight innings in the opener, while Young Harris defeated the University of West Georgia 2-0 in game two. Young Harris improved to 1-1 while the Wolves fell to 3-1.
The Mountain Lions return to action Sunday (Feb. 4) in Gulf Shores, Alabama. as they play Delta State at 11:15 a.m. Central time followed by the University of West Alabama at 1:30 p.m..
In the win against West Georgia,
Dharma Rosbrugh (1-0) picked up her first win in a Mountain Lion uniform in big fashion. Rosbrugh pitched a complete game shutout, only allowing three hits, three walks, and she struck out three.
Young Harris started the second game with a run in the first inning off a sacrifice bunt by
Hannah Harrison that scored
Kristan Lizardi. The Mountain Lions added their other run in the fourth after
Sara Alderman drew a bases loaded walk that scored
Lauren Crowe.
Raya Moncus (0-1) took the loss for West Georgia as she allowed two runs on two hits over 3.1 innings pitched.
The Mountain Lions opened up the scoring in the fifth inning against Delta Safter
Murphy Davis reached on a fielding error, which allowed
Jill Torres to come home to score. Later in the fifth,
Georgia Webb hit a RBI single to right field, scoring Harrison. Lizardi made the score 3-0 in favor of Young Harris in the sixth inning after a RBI single to left field that scored Alderman.
The Statesmen tagged reliever
Louise Disi for three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 3. Neither team would score in the seventh inning, which led to extra innings. The Mountain Lions left a runner stranded at third base in the top of the eighth inning to give Delta State a chance to win the game. The Statesmen won the game after a wild pitch by
Kennedy Kotula that scored Mari Alex Sandridge from third base.
Taylor Johnson (1-0) got the win for Delta State as she struck out two and allowed one walk in two innings pitched.
Kotula (0-1) took the loss for Young Harris as she struck out two and allowed one run in one inning pitched.
Sandridge finished the game with one hit and two runs scored.
Lizardi, Harrison, and
Emily Harris each went 2-for-4 at the plate in the loss for the Mountain Lions.
