Pacers get by Mountain Lions 64-49

AIKEN, S.C. | Melyk Taouil scored 18 points to lead the University of South Carolina-Aiken past Young Harris College 64-49 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The Pacers ended their season at 8-20 overall and 5-17 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions completed their campaign at 8-20 and 6-16. The game was the final one for YHC's six seniors - Briana Bell, Eryn Cochran, Sarah Garner, Sara Jorgensen, Meghan McQuade and Jada Williams.

The Mountain Lions opened up a 5-2 lead after Garner hit a three-pointer 60 seconds into the game, but the Pacers outscored Young Harris 16-4 the rest of the quarter as USC Aiken took a 18-9 lead. 

USC AIken extended its lead to as many as 12 points (31-19) midway through the second quarter before taking a 34-27 halftime lead. The Mountain Lions cut the deficit down to one point (36-35) after Cochran's layup with 6:24 to play in the third quarter. The Pacers used a 10-1 run over the final 2:51 of the quarter to open up a 51-39 lead on Taouil's jumper with five seconds remaining in the third.

The closest the Mountain Lions, who shot just 28.8 percent (15-of-52) from the floor, would get the rest of the way was seven points (51-44) after a three-pointer by Cochran with 8:11 to go.

Marissa Bruce added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Pacers, while Celine Vega added 11 points. Taouil also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Cochran led the Mountain Lions with 21 points as she connected on five three-pointers. Garner nearly had a double double as she grabbed 10 rebounds and contributed nine points. Sarah Reid also grabbed eight rebounds for Young Harris. Jorgensen dished out a game-high six assists.
