Mountain Lions sweep pair from Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. | Young Harris College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Belmont Abbey College Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon at Crusader Field.

Georgia Webb's RBI double in the top of the seventh gave the Mountain Lions a 2-1 win in the opener before YHC collected 12 hits in the nightcap to win 7-1.

With the sweep, the Mountain Lions improved to 9-6, while the Crusaders fell to 6-10. Young Harris returns to action with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday (Feb. 25) against Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina.

Haylie Shope and Webb had back-to-back doubles in the first inning of game one to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead. The Crusaders tied the game at 1 in the fourth on an Elena Duran sacrifice fly.

It would stay that way until the seventh. Murphy Davis led off with a walk and moved to second on Hannah Harrison's sacrifice bunt. A Shope single moved Davis to third base before Webb lined a double down the left field line to give YHC a 2-1 lead.

Kennedy Kotula (3-2) earned the win as she scattered six hits and struck out four in seven innings, while Chace Helms (3-3) took the loss.

Shope and Webb each tallied three hits for the Mountain Lions.

YHC scored three runs in the third inning of the nightcap off Belmont Abbey starter Annabeth Watkins (2-5). Davis drove in the first run on a single through the left side before Webb clubbed a double to left-center to score the other two runs.

The Mountain Lions took a 6-0 lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Emily Harris' single up the middle scored Kristan Lizardi, who led off the fifth inning with a triple through the left side. Madison Urquiola add an RBI single to right an inning later.

Shope added a two-run homer - her second of 2018 - to left field in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Dharma Rosbrugh (5-3) allowed just four hits and struck out five in the complete-game effort.

Harris led the YHC offensive attack with three hits, while Webb and Urquiola had two hits apiece.
