MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Young Harris College fell to Georgia College 9-2 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday (Feb. 23) evening at John Kurtz Field.
The Bobcats improved to 7-4 overall and to 4-0 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-6 and 2-2. The two teams wrap up their three-game weekend series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 24).
The Bobcats jumped to an early first inning lead after a two-run homer to left-center field by Logan Mattix. Mike Warren completed the four-run inning with a double to right center field that scored Brandon Purcell and Nate Schmal.
Georgia College added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run over the right field fence by Cal Gentry. Matthew Miller later scored in the inning after Mattix reached on a fielding error by the shortstop
Corley Reynolds.
Schmal singled through the left side in the sixth to score Wesley Wommack to extend the Bobcat lead to 6-0.
Georgia College added two more runs in the seventh inning with a RBI ground out to shortstop by Cassius Young that scored Warren and a RBI ground out to second base by Gentry that scored Garrett Green.
Jackson Jones put the Mountain Lions on the board in the top of the ninth inning with a single up the middle that scored
Logan Worley.
Zavier Lushington scored on a balk by Kyle King for the second Young Harris run.
Charlie Hecht (3-0) picked up the win for the Bobcats as he allowed just two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings .
Michael Livingston (1-1) earned the loss for the Mountain Lions as he allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits over 5.2 innings pitched.
Jones collected one hit and one RBI.
Rudy Gaona went 2-for-3 at the plate while Worley and
Cory Ewald each picked up a hit.
