YOUNG HARRIS Ga. | The Young Harris College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Southern Wesleyan University Thursday (Feb. 22) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.
Young Harris finished game one in six innings as they won 10-0 and used a five-run fourth inning to secure the 7-1 victory in game two.
The Mountain Lions improved to 7-6 on the season, while the Warriors fell to 3-11. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Feb. 24) as they travel to Belmont, North Carolina as they take on Belmont Abbey College in a non-conference doubleheader.
Murphy Davis led off the opener with a solo home run - her first of the season - for the Mountain Lions, over the left field fence to jump start a four-=run first inning. Later in the inning,
Haylie Shope singled to center field which brought
Jill Torres around to score.
Georgia Webb scored for Young Harris after a RBI single to left field by
Emily Harris. Two batters later, Shope scored after
Biz Walters reached first base on an error.
Shope picked up her second RBI of the game for the Mountain Lions in the bottom half of the second with a single to right field that allowed
Kristan Lizardi to score.
Kelsey Nix made it a 6-0 game after a fielder's choice let Webb come around to score.
Hannah Harrison led off Young Harris sixth inning with a pinch-hit home run - her first of the season - over the right field fence.
With runners on second and third for the Mountain Lions, Shope ended the game with a three-run homer - her first of the season - that went over the fence in left center field.
Kennedy Kotula (2-2) earned the win for Young Harris as she pitched a complete game shutout with three hits and three strikeouts.
Shope went 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored. Davis collected three hits, a RBI and two runs scored. Lizardi, Alderman, Torres, Webb, Harris, and Harrison each tallied one hit.
Jose Edwards (0-3) earned the loss for Southern Wesleyan as she allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits with one walk in 5.2 innings.
The Warriors scored their lone run of the afternoon in the first inning of game two after Kassidy Hamrick scored on a throwing error.
The Mountain Lions answered in the bottom of the first with a double steal that brought Torres home to score.
Young Harris broke the tie game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a bases-clearing double to right center by
Grace Botti. Botti later scored on a groundout to second base by Harrison. Torres completed the five-run inning with an infield single to third base that scored Davis.
Botti picked up her fourth RBI of the game in the fifth with a groundout to short stop that brought Alderman home to score.
Dharma Rosbrugh (4-3) picked up the win for the Mountain Lions as she gave up one run (unearned) on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings pitched.
Botti finished with one hit and four RBI and a run scored. Harrison and Torres each had a hit and a RBI. Davis, Alderman, and Harris all collected two hits.
Hunter Hoskins (3-5) earned the loss for the Warriors as she allowed seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings pitched.
