Ewald, Campbell lead Mountain Lions over Bearcats 10-3

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.  |  Cory Ewald and Bailey Campbell each hit three-run home runs to propel Young Harris College past Lander University 10-3 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday (Feb. 17) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the PBC, while the Bearcats fell to 3-5 and 0-2. The two teams wrap up their three-game series Sunday (Feb. 18) at 1 p.m.

Campbell sent the 0-1 pitch over the right field fence for a three-run home run, his second of the season, for the Mountain Lions as part of a four-run first inning. Young Harris added two more runs in the second inning after a single up the middle by Logan Worley scored Tyler Washington. Rudy Gaona reached on a fielding error  that allowed Worley to come around to score for the second run..

Corley Reynolds scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 7-2 Mountain Lion lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ewald sent the 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for a thre- run home run, his first of the season, for Young Harris as he extended the lead to 10-2. 

Lander rounded out the scoring in the top of the seventh inning after a RBI groundout to third by Alex Conaway that scored Vincent Addona. 

Mat Szabo (1-1) earned his first win in a Mountain Lion uniform allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts over five innings pitched. McLain Harris picked up his first save of the season as he allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts over four innings pitched.

Ewald finished with two hits, three RBI and a run scored. Campbell went 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Gaona had three hits, including two doubles, with one RBI and two runs scored. Worley had two hits, one RBI and two runs scored while Reynolds had two hits and a run scored.

J.D. Cook (1-2) took the loss for the Bearcats as he allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits over 5.1 innings pitched. 

Addona went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored. Mike Fitschen had two hits and one RBI.
