No. 17 Saint Leo rallies past Young Harris 15-10

SAINT LEO, Fla. | Saint Leo University broke open a close match with eight goals in the third quarter as the No. 17 Lions rallied for a 15-10 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over Young Harris College Friday (Feb. 16) evening at the University Turf Stadium.

Saint Leo improved to 3-0, while the Mountain Lions dropped their third consecutive match against a nationally ranked opponent. Young Harris returns to action Sunday (Feb. 17) at 1 p.m. when they travel to Melbourne, Florida, for a match against No 19 Florida Institute of Technology.

The Mountain Lions took a 2-1 lead after the first quarter on goals from Garrett Blake and Bevan Pate. Bruce Silk added a goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter to give YHC a 3-1 lead. Saint Leo got two goals to tie the match at 3. Young Harris scored three of the next five goals in the match as the Mountain Lions took a 6-5 lead at the half. The Mountain Lions got strikes from Chandler Bradley, Blake and Silk during the run.

Saint Leo took control of the match as they scored eight goals - four from Charlie Kurtenbach - in the third quarter as they opened up a 13-8 lead. The Lions scored five of the first six goals in the quarter.

Blake led Young Harris with three goals, while Silk and Bradley has two each, and Daniel Zimny, Pate, and Jimmy Martelli found the back of the next once. Blake, Bradley, Nolan Moon, Silk and Zimny had one assist each.

Saint Leo held a 34-29 edge on shots and 26-25 advantage in ground balls. Young Harris won 20 of the 28 face-offs contested.  Zach Stephenson led Young Harris with 20 face-off wins and 15 ground balls. Silk and Billy Magill each scooped up two ground balls. Sean Dever had seven saves in net for the Mountain Lions.
