Mountain Lions split doubleheader with Spartans

TAMPA, Fla.  |  Young Harris College split a non-conference softball doubleheader with University of Tampa Sunday (Feb. 11) afternoon at Naimoli Family Stadium. 

The Spartans scored five runs in the sixth inning to take game one 6-2, while the Mountain Lions used a three-run third inning to win game two 3-2.

Young Harris improved to 4-5 on the season while Tampa fell to 3-5. The Mountain Lions return to action Saturday (Feb. 17) as they travel to Tigerville, South Carolina, to take on North Greenville University in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. 

The Mountain Lions reached home first in game one after Torres scored on a double to left field by Sara Alderman in the fourth inning. Grace Botti then hit an infield single that brought Alderman around to score to take a 2-0 lead. 

The Spartans cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the fourth after Phillips doubled to left field that scored Breanna Taphouse. 

Tampa scored five times in the bottom of the sixth that started with two bases-loaded walks by Press and Emalee Jansen. Lauren Pascoe picked up two RBI after a single to right field that scored Press and Phillips. Sahrina Cortes rounded out the scoring with a double to left center that scored Jansen. 

Dooley (3-3) picked up the complete game win for the Spartans as she allowed two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.

Pascoe went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBI. Cortes, Phillips, Press, and Jansen each had a RBI in the victory.

Dharma Rosbrugh (2-3) earned the loss for the Mountain Lions as she allowed four runs on two hits and four walks in 0.2 innings pitched.

Kristan Lizardi and Botti both picked up two hits in the loss. Alderman went 1-for-3 at the plate with a RBI and a run scored. 

The Spartans started the scoring of game two in the bottom of the second after an error allowed Bailey Phillips to score. Young Harris answered in the top of the third by a Murphy Davis double to right field that scored Jill Torres and Emily Harris. Georgia Webb singled through the right side to bring Haylie Shope home to score to extend the Mountain Lion lead 3-1. Shelby Press brought the score within one (3-2) after a single to center field that plated Mackenzie Allen. \

Louise Disi (1-0) tossed a complete game for Young Harris for her first win of the season with two runs (one earned) on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Davis went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Harris, Torres, and Shope each had one hit and a run scored.

Makaleigh Dooley (3-4) earned the loss for Tampa as she gave up three runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts over seven innings pitched. 

Farrell went 2-for-2 and Phillips had one hit and a run scored.
