Willis' buzzer beater gives Mountain Lions a 97-94 PBC win over Flagler

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Alphonso Willis hit a 32-foot buzzer beater to give the Young Harris College men's basketball team a thrilling 97[-94 Peach Belt Conference victory over Flagler College Wednesday (Dec. 19) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions, who have won two of their past three games, improved to 4-6 overall and leveled their PBC ledger at 2-2, while the Saints slipped to 5-4 and 2-1. Young Harris will break for the holidays and return to action Jan. 2 when they travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, for a 3:30 p.m. league contest against Lander University.

Willis' layup with nine seconds remaining gave Young Harris a 94-93 advantage. After a Flagler timeout, Vaughn McCall drew a foul with 1.9 seconds for the Saints. McCall sank the first attempt to tie the score at 94, but missed the second second as it rolled around the rim. Justin Jones corralled the rebound and the Mountain Lions were able to call their final timeout with 0.4 seconds remaining near midcourt.

After the timeout, Paul Miller found Willis near the NCAA logo on the floor and Willis was able to convert the quick catch and jump shot that swished through the net as the horn sounded.

Miller led the Mountain Lions with 18 points. The lone assist he had in the game was on the final shot. Willis finished with 16 points and the only 3-pointer he took in the game was the one at the buzzer. He added eight rebounds. Brian Harper, who had seven assists, and Cheick Kone each added 17 points for the Mountain Lions, who tied a school record (NCAA era) with 14 three-pointers in the contest.

Damerit Brown led Flagler with 25 points. Brown added a season-high nine rebounds. Gedi Juozapaitis recorded his third-straight double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. McCall added 19 points while Logan Swackhammer tallied 13 points, six assists, and four steals. Kris Totoris contributed 12 points.

The Mountain Lions led by as many as nine points (82-73)  after a Harper layup with 5:20 remaining. Flagler countered with a 13-4 run over the next 2:13 to tie the game at 86 on a Brown jumper with a little over three minutes left. Swackhammer's layup with 1:43 left to go gave the Saints a 90-88 lead.

After Harper converted two free throws to tie the game at 90 with 95 seconds left, Brown sank a three-pointer to give Flagler a 93-90 advantage with 48 seconds to go. Two Kone free throws for the Mountain Lions and Willis' layup with nine seconds left gave Young Harris a 94-93 lead.

The Mountain Lions made 29-of-37 from the free throw line (78.4 percent), but made 22-of-25 (88 percent) in the second half alone, including 16 of their final 17 attempts.
