YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Alphonso Willis scored 33 points to lead five Young Harris College men's basketball players in double figures in a record-setting 118-103 Peach Belt Conference victory over Lander University Thursday (Dec. 13) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Mountain Lions improved to 3-5 overall and to 1-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Bearcats slipped to 2-7 and 1-2. Young Harris returns to action Monday (Dec. 17) when they host an 11 a.m. PBC contest against Augusta University. The Mountain Lions will welcome 560 middle school students to the game as part of Education Day.
The 118 points for Young Harris set a new NCAA era for most points in a game, eclipsing the 111 the Mountain Lions recorded in a 111-107 overtime win over Columbus Stats University during the 2012-13 season. YHC set season highs in field goal shooting (40-of-73, .548), three-point field goal shooting (13-of-32, .406), field goals (40) and three-point field goals (13).
Young Harris scored the game's first five points and opened up a a 23-11 lead after
Brian Harper sank two free throws with 12:55 remaining in the first half. The Mountain Lions used a 11-2 run to open up a 19-point lead (34-15) after a steal and layup by
Nicksen Blanc with 9:24 to go. YHC pushed out its lead to 21 points (42-21) after a three-pointer by
Troy Cagle with 6:08 to play. Young Harris, which shot 59.5 percent (22-of-37) from the field and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from long distance in the opening 20 minutes, led by as many as 25 points (52-27) in the first half after
Justin Jones sank a three-pointer.
Lander got back in the game as the used a 13-3 run over the first four minutes of the second half to get as close as 12 points (63-51) after Marquel Wiggins hit two free throws; however, that would be as close as the Bearcats would get as YHC used a 10-3 run to extend its lead to 19 points (73-54) after an old-fashioned three-point play by Blanc with 14:09 to go. The Mountain Lions led by as many as 27 points (102-75) in the second half.
Willis scored his points on 14-of-19 shooting from the floor. Jones finished with 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting (5-of-9 from three-point range), while Harper had a double double with 18 points and 12 assists. Cagle sank four three-pointers as he scored 14 points, while
Seth McCoy had 11. Blanc finished with 11 rebounds to go along with nine points and four blocked shots.Â
Wiggins led the Bearcats with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Jordan DIngle had 22 points and 10 assists. DeShundre Rucker collected 15 points and had eight rebounds,while Elijah Alston had 10 points and eight rebounds.
