Catawba uses fast start to spoil home opener for Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Jameel Taylor and Devin Cooper scored 17 points each as Catawba College used a quick start to get past Young Harris College 85-68 in a non-conference men's basketball game Wednesday (Nov. 14) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Indians improved to 2-1, while the Mountain Lions fell to 0-3. Young Harris returns to action Monday (Nov. 19) when they travel to West Palm Beach, Florida, for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Catawba took control of the game as they opened the contest on a 20-5 run after Carter Phillips hit a three-pointer with 12:57 to play. The Indians hit five three-pointers in a row during the streak.

Catawba extended its lead to 17 points (25-8) after a Phillips layup nearly two minutes later before the Mountain Lions got back into the game. Young Harris over the next four minutes put together a 14-2 run to get within five points (27-22) after J.J. Flores sank a three-pointer with 7:29 left.  The Mountain Lions used the long-distance shot to get back in the game by sinking four three-pointer during the run.

The Indians, who led 39-31 at the half, used a 15-4 run in the early stages of the second half to open up a 58-41 lead on a Phillips layup with 13:07 to go.

Phillips added 15 points for Catawba, while Daquan Lilly (12) and Jeremy McLaughlin (11) also finished in double figures. McLaughlin led the Indians with eight rebounds, while Taylor grabbed seven.

Zion Williams led Young Harris with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. Nicksen Blanc nearly had a double double with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Justin Jones had 11 points. Flores finished with 10 points, while Brian Harper recorded seven steals.
