No. 1 Mountain Lions edge Pioneers 2-1 in second round

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College got scores from Macauley King and Kevin Coiffic as the No. 1-ranked Mountain Lions defeated Tusculum University 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament Sunday (Nov. 11) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Mountain Lions, who are the No. 1 seed in the Southeast region, improved to 17-0-1, while the fourth-seeded Pioneers ended their campaign at 13-7-1. Young Harris will advance to third round at 4 p.m. Friday (Nov. 16) where they will host No. 7 Lander University in the Southeast region championship match. The second-seeded Bearcats defeated No. 6 seed Anderson (S.C.) University 1-0 in double overtime in their second round match.

Young Harris took a 1-0 lead at the 20:55 mark when James Thomas took the ball down the right side of the field, crossed the ball to Carlos Gomez in the box and Gomez played it to King, who buried the ball in the center of the net from 12 yards out. It was King's third goal of the season.

The Mountain Lions, who had defeated the Pioneers 4-0 during the regular season, added an insurance goal with 5:31 remaining in the match when Dani Fischer sent in a corner kick from the right side and found Coiffic at the back post. Coiffic then headed the ball in for his third goal of 2018.

The Pioneers got a goal back with 62 seconds remaining in the match when Rian Marques headed the ball in for his second goal of the year off Fabian Proesch's direct kick.

Tusculum outshot Young Harris 9-6 (4-2 on goal), while the Mountain Lions held a 9-2 margin on corner kicks. Alex Iglesias recorded three saves in goal for the Mountain Lions, while Sam Gilbert was in goal for Tusculum.
