Young Harris shuts down Hurricanes 5-0

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Four different players scored as the Young Harris College women's soccer team shut out Georgia Southwestern State University 5-0 in a Peach Belt Conference contest Saturday (Oct. 6) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Mountain Lions won their second consecutive match as they improved to 4-5-0 overall and to 2-3-0 inside the PBC, while the Hurricanes fell to 2-9-0 and 0-5-0. Young Harris will return to action Wednesday (Oct. 10) with a 6 p.m. PBC contest against Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia.

Young Harris, which outshot Georgia Southwestern 47-3 (27-2 on goal), got out to a 1-0 lead at the 10:35 mark as Lailah Muscat found Elin Pedersen on the left side of the box. Pedersen put the ball into the right corner of the net for her first goal of 2018. The Mountain Lions doubled their lead 11 minutes lates as Pedersen played a through ball down the left side of the field and Britt Verstegen put the ball in from 15 yards out for her first goal of the season.

Baylee Roche, who leads the Mountain Lions with six goals, had a long blast from the left side off a Verstegen assist to give YHC a 3-0 lead at the 28:03 mark. Young Harris closed out the scoring in the first half in 41st minute as Coleen Johnson headed the ball in at the back post after Lucero Robayo sent in a corner kick - Young Harris held a 12-0 advantage on corner kicks -  from the left side. It was Johnson's first goal of the year.

Roche recorded her third two-goal match of the season at the 71:24 mark as she followed her own miss that careened off the right post to give Young Harris a 5-0 lead.

 Alyssa Spridgeon recorded her second shutout of the season for the Mountain Lions as she recorded two saves. Alina Rodriguez (10) and Hannah Morrone (10) combined for 20 saves in net for Georgia Southwestern.
