YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.  |
R.J. Sessions scored eight of his game-high 21 points in overtime, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 36 seconds remaining for Georgia Southwestern State University as they edged Young Harris College 88-82 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday (Jan 6.) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Hurricanes improved to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the PBC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 3-10 and 2-5. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Jan. 10) as they travel to Dahlonega, Georgia, to take on the its cross-mountain rival University of North Georgia in the Battle of Blood Mountain at 7:30 p.m.

The Mountain Lions were down as many as 12 points (72-60)  with 3:51 remaining in regulation. Young Harris went on a 13-3 run in the last 2:16 of the second half that led to the Mountain Lions tying the game at 77 on a stick back by Greg Murphy with 8.7 seconds left. Andre Statam threw the  ensuing inbounds pass all the way across the court and out of bounds for Georgia Southwestern which gave the Mountain Lions the ball under their basket . Zion Williams missed the game-winning basket from the corner as time expired.

"I was proud of our furious comeback down the stretch in the second half," said Young Harris head coach Pete Herrmann. "That was a real plus. I'm frustrated we were lethargic for a large part of the game."

Each team only scored one field goal in overtime, combining to shoot 2-for-13. Sessions hit the go-ahead three pointer with 36 seconds remaining in the game to give the Hurricanes an 85-82 lead, 25 seconds after the Mountain Lions had tied the game on an old-fashioned three-point play to tie the game.. The Hurricanes, who went 8-of-10 from the free throw line in overtime, sealed the win from the charity stripe as they made three free throws in the final 13 seconds.

Sessions had five assists for Georgia Southwestern, while Quenten Taylor scored 19 points and six assists and Devin Watson had 18 points and five assists. Hasaan Buggs had a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.
