YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Sara Jorgensen scored a game-high 18 points as Young Harris College shot a season-high 53.1 percent from the floor to beat Augusta University 80-60 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Monday (Jan. 15) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Mountain Lions improved to 6-11 overall and 3-7 in the PBC, while the Jaguars fell to 3-10 and 1-8. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Jan. 17) as they travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, to take on Lander University in a 5:30 p.m. PBC contest.
The Mountain Lions started the game strong as they outscored Augusta 27-12 in the first quarter. Young Harris shot 64.3 percent (9-of-14) in the first quarter, while they made five three-pointers and scored 11 points off four Augusta turnovers.
Eryn Cochran scored 10 of her 15 points in the first 10 minutes, as she went 3-of5 from beyond the arc.
The Mountain Lions took a 14-point lead (44-30) into halftime after a three-pointer by
Briana Bell with 42 seconds left. Jorgensen scored seven of her 18 points in the third quarter, as she went 3-of-5 from the floor. Young Harris went 10-of-14 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to maintain a steady lead over the Jaguars.
"Great win all the way around," said YHC head coach
Matt Stearsman. "I don't like to talk a lot about individual performances, but
Ashlyn Ellison and
Eryn Cochran were tremendous handling the ball today. Then you add on that Eryn put the ball in the basket well, that's a good recipe for success. I thought
Sara Jorgensen was phenomenal.
Sarah Garner had another double double,
Meghan McQuade banged home a shot. I also thought Ge'Naisha and
Sarah Reid were terrific. That was as complete of a game as we've had. Very happy and hopefully it will carry on."
The Mountain Lions tied a college record with 11 three-pointers, while Jorgensen was two points shy of her career-high. YHC also connected on 11 three-pointers in the game at Augusta in December.
Ashleigh Outler scored 17 points for Augusta and Mallory Myers scored 12. Cynara Pitt scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Jorgensen finished with 18 points and three rebounds, Cochran had 15 points and eight assists and
Ge'Naisha Robinson picked up 10 points and five rebounds.
Sarah Garner picked up her third double double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. This game marked the eighth game of the season for Garner with double digit rebounds, including the last seven in a row.
Sarah Reid added nine points and grabbed five rebounds.
