YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Tamyrik Fields scored a game-high 18 points while Deane Williams added 16 as they led Augusta University over Young Harris College 71-56 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Monday (Jan. 15) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Jaguars snapped a three-game losing streak as they improved to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the PBC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 4-12 and 3-7. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Jan. 17) as they travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, to take on Lander University in a 7:30 p.m. Peach Belt contest.
The Mountain Lions went wire-to-wire with the Jaguars in the first half as the game featured three ties and 10 lead changes.
J.B. Charles tied the game at 20 with 52 seconds to play in the first half before Augusta scored six points in a span of 30 seconds.
Antonio Wade nailed a jumper as time expired to bring Young Harris within four points (26-22) going into halftime.
Fields scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, going 6-of-8 from the floor.
Ben Waterhouse tied the game at 30 after a free throw at the 16:57 mark. The Jaguars went on a 19-8 run over the next 7:18 to give them an 11-point lead (49-38) with 9:39 left in the game after a short jumper by Mikkel Kolstad. Wade brought the score within five (57-52) for the Mountain Lions, who shot 30.6 percent from the field (19-of-62), after a pair of free throws at the 4:06 mark; however, Augusta closed out the game on a 14-4 run to seal the win.
"We played hard and tough defensively," said YHC head coach
Pete Herrmann. "Fields hurt us in both games this year. We did a bretty good job on him, but he made four big jumpers late for Augusta."
Fields finished the game with 18 points and five rebounds for the Jaguars, while Aaron Byrd tallied 14 points and seven rebounds. Williams picked up a double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Wade finished with 18 points and five rebounds for the Mountain Lions, while Charles finished with 12 points.
Nicksen Blanc tallied seven points and picked up 12 rebounds.
