YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. |
Carlos Gomez's header with 6:47 remaining in double overtime was the difference as No. 19 Young Harris College defeated its cross-mountain rival University of North Georgia 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference and Battle of Blood Mountain men's soccer match  Wednesday (Sept. 27) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Mountain Lions, who hold a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series, improved to 6-1-1 overall and to 2-0-0 in the conference, while the Nighthawks fell to 4-4-1 and 1-1-0. Young Harris will now travel to Aiken, South Carolina for a 3:30 p.m. PBC tilt against the University of South Carolina Aiken Saturday (Sept. 30).

UNG took an early lead off a set piece. Carl Ludwig Eriksson served a corner kick from the left side into the box where teammate Alex Grant slotted the ball into the right corner of the net at the 5:32 mark. It was Grant's fourth brace of the season.

It would stay that way until the 73rd minute. Young Harris, which held a 31-9 advantage on shots, finally broke through. The Mountain Lions, which held a 20-3 margin in shots in the second half and overtime periods, took advantage of a corner kick of their own. Macauley King played a short corner to Gomez on the left side. Gomez found Seba Andreassen in the box  and Andreassen headed the ball into the back of the net at the 72:33 mark to tie the match at 1. It was Andreassen's third goal of the year.

The score remained tied until the second overtime. King served a corner kick from the left side into Gomez at the near post and Gomez headed the ball into the left corner of the net for the game winner at the 103:13 mark. It Gomez's fifth goal of the season and the third game-winning goal for the junior forward from Algete, Spain. For King, it was his sixth assist of the campaign.

Young Harris held an 11-4 margin on corner kicks, including an 8-1 margin in the second half and overtimes. Alex Igelsias stopped three shots in goal for the Mountain Lions, while Matt Sharman turned away 12 for the Nighthawks.
