SAVANNAH, Ga. | Pfeiffer University scored twice in the fifth inning to rally for a 2-1 victory over Young Harris College in the second round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Softball Regional Friday (May 12) afternoon at the Armstrong Softball Field.
The Falcons, who are ranked eighth nationally and seeded No. 7 in the regional, improved to 46-6 and advances to Saturday's (May 13) noon championship game. The Mountain Lions, who are the No. 6 seed in the regional, fell to 43-13 and will now play in a 4 p.m. elimination game Friday (May 12) against the winner of second round game between the Carson-Newman University and Armstrong State University
Jill Torres gave the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead in the fourth on her team leading sixth homer of the season over the center field fence.
The Falcons retook the lead with two two-out runs in the fith. Kaleigh Troutman, who went 2-for-2, started the rally with a one-out single to left and moved up 60 feet on Emma Tuttle's sacrifice bunt. Vida Blue Sherrill singled up the middle to tie the game at 1. Sherrill then stole second and scored on Stephanie Fortner's RBI single to left. Fortner went 2-for-3 for Pfeiffer.
Caitlin Christian (13-3) only allowed two hits and struck out four for the Falcons, while
Nikkie Kovalsky allowed six hits and struck out two for Young Harris.
Jeanie Perrucci had the other hit for the Mountain Lions, leading off the bottom of the first with a single to center.
