DAHLONEGA, Ga. | The University of North Georgia swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from Young Harris College Saturday (April 8) afternoon at Hill Stadium.
The 12th-ranked Nighthawks defeated the Mountain Lions 4-2 in the opener before taking a 7-3 decision in the nightcap. Both teams stand at 35-9 overall, with North Georgia is 15-4 in the Peach Belt, while Young Harris fell to 13-7. Young Harris, which had its 16-game win streak snapped, will return to action Tuesday (April 11) with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Lee University at E.D. Rivers Field.
Young Harris tied the opener at 1 in the third inning on a
Hannah Harrison RBI double. After North Georgia took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on Shelby Hammontree two-run homer, Young Harris got a run back in the sixth on
Chandler Stooksbury's RBI single.
Jeanie Perrucci (17-4) took the loss in game one as she allowed eight hits and struck out four in five innings. Harrison had two of the five YHC hits in the opener.Â
North Georgia scored twice in both the first and second innings to take a 4-2 lead in the nightcap. YHC got two runs back in the fourth to cut the deficit in half as Stooksbury and
Georgia Webb drove in runs with singles. The Mountain Lions closed to within a run at 4-3 on a bases-loaded walk to
Kelsey Nix in the fifth.
The Nighthawks thwarted the YHC comeback as Hammontree struck for two-run homer in the fifth.
Nikkie Kovalsky (17-5) took the loss for the Mountain Lions in the circle.Â
