Mountain Lions win back-to-back GSC Invitational titles with 16-12 win over UAH

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Kendra Parenteau and Nicole Kernohan combined to score nine goals as the Young Harris College women's lacrosse team recorded their second consecutive Gulf South Conference Invitational Tournament title with a 16-12 victory over the University of Alabama in Huntsville Sunday (April 23) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Mountain Lions ended the season on a six-match winning streak as they improved to 12-7. The Chargers, who also lost to YHC in last year's inaugural tournament, fell to 14-5. It was the third meeting between the two teams that shared the 2017 regular-season title.

It was a nip-and-tuck first half - neither team enjoyed more than a two goal advantage - as the lead seesawed back and forward between the two teams before the Mountain Lions took an 8-7 lead at the half

UAH scored two of the first three goals of the second half to tie the match at 9 with 23:50 remaining. Rachel Lepine started a 6-1 run by the Mountain Lions with a goal five minutes later to give the Mountain Lions a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Kernohan scored first of her back-to-back goals eight seconds later. After the Chargers got a score back, the Mountain Lions reeled off three unanswered goals - two from Parenteau and another by Sarah Bialecki - to open up a 15-10 lead with 5:03 to play.

Parenteau, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after scoring 12 goals in the event, led the Mountain Lions with five goals, Kernohan, who was named to the all-tournament, had four goals, while all-tournament performer Rachel Lepine added three more. Erika Cross and Bialecki had two each. Cross led YHC with four assists, while Maddie Peek had two. Bialecki also registered an assist.

All-tournament performer Meghan Tonnesen led the Mountain Lions with six draw control wins, while Lepine had three. Hannah Sacristan, who was named to the all-tournament team, and Tonnesen led YHC with three ground balls apiece. Julia Darroch picked up 10 saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
