BELMONT, N.C. | Young Harris College and Belmont Abbey College split a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday (April 18) afternoon at Crusader Field.
The Mountain Lions ended their regular season with a program-best (NCAA era) 41-11 mark after capturing game one 12-4 in six innings before the Crusaders took the nightcap 1-0. Young Harris will now turn their attention to this weekend's Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Milledgeville, Georgia. The Mountain Lions are the No. 4 seed in the eight-team, single-elimination tournament and will play tournament host and No. 5 seed Georgia College in a 4 p.m. quarterfinal contest Friday (April 21).Â
Young Harris took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener.
Murphy Davis had a RBI single to center, before
Kelsey Nix smacked a two-run homer to center field. It was her fifth of the season. After the Crusaders got two of the runs back in the third, Young Harris scored twice in the fourth - one on Nix' single and another on a
Chandler Stooksbury sacrifice fly.
The Mountain Lions added four more runs in the fifth on a
Hannah Harrison RBI single and a bases-clearing double by Davis to left-center field. Young Harris put up a three spot in the sixth to end the game early. Davis,
Jill Torres and
Grace Botti contributed run-scoring singles.
Young Harris had 14 hits in game one with Davis going 4-for-4 with 5 RBI.
Jeanie Perrucci, Torres. Botti and Nix had two hits each. In the nightcap, YHC had five hits with Perrucci,
Biz Walters. Harrison, Davis and Stooksbury each having one.
Nikki Kovalsky (22-6) earned the decision in both games for the Mountain Lions.
