Mountain Lions tame Bobcats 9-3 in PBC quarters

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Young Harris College used a six-run second inning to defeat Georgia College 9-3 in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament Friday (April 21) evening at the Peeler Complex.

The Mountain Lions, who are the No. 4 seed in the tournament, improved to 42-11, while the No. 5 seed Georgia College fell to 30-19. Young Harris will face its cross-mountain rival the University of North Georgia in a 12:30 p.m. semifinal game Saturday (April 22). No. 1 seed North Georgia, which is ranked eighth nationally, defeated No. 8 seed Francis Marion University in its quarterfinal 6-1. 

Georgia College took a 3-0 lead after its first two at-bats as Faith Flanders hit a two-run homer in the first inning. The Mountain Lions responded in the bottom of the second with six runs on four hits and two GC miscues. Kelsey Nix drove in the first run on her double that one hops the fence in left-center. YHC tied the game at 3 after two runs scored on a Bobcat throwing error. YHC took the lead for good on Hannah Harrison's RBI single up the middle. The Mountain Lions scored their final two runs in the inning to take a 6-3 lead off a fielder error by Georgia College.

The Mountain Lions pushed across a run in the fourth on an infield single by Nix and added two more runs in the fifth on a Jill Torres single through the right side and a sacrifice fly by Harrison.

Nikkie Kovalsky (23-6) earned the win with six scoreless innings of relief, striking out three. Kayla Price (18-6) took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing six runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Nix and Chandler Stooksbury led the Mountain Lions with two hits apiece.
