MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | The Young Harris College softball team ran their win streak to 10 games as the Mountain Lions swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Georgia College Sunday (March 26) afternoon at the Peeler Complex.
The Mountain Lions improved to 29-7 overall and to 9-5 in the league after posting wins of 11-7 and 9-5 over the Bobcats, who fell to 24-14 and 10-4. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (April 1) at E.D. Rivers Field when they host Lander University in a 1 p.m. PBC doubleheader.
Young Harris jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as
Grace Botti doubled down the left field line to score the first two runs, before
Kelsey Nix added a three-run homer to left field. It was Nix's third home run of the season.Â
Georgia College scored two runs in both the first and third innings, but the Mountain Lions broke open the game with three-run innings in the fifth and sixth to take an 11-4 lead.
Murphy Davis and Botti contributed RBI singles in the fifth, while
Hannah Harrison drove in another with a triple to right field. Davis drove in two more runs in the sixth on a double to left-center field and Nix added a bases-loaded walk.
Nikkie Kovalsky (16-4) earned the win for the Mountain Lions with 6 1/3 innings of relief.
The Mountain Lions got 11 hits in game one. Botti led the way with three, while
Jeanie Perrucci and Davis collecting two each.Â
Georgia College took a 4-0 lead after three innings in the nightcap, before the Mountain Lions exploded for five runs in the fourth inning.
Georgia Webb drove home the first run on a single before
Jill Torres smacked a grand slam over the left field wall to give YHC a 5-4 lead. It was her fourth homer of 2017.
The Bobcats tied the game at 5 with a run in their half of the inning, but Young Harris broke through with a four-run sixth inning to take a 9-5 lead. Botti walked with the bases loaded for a run and Harrison added a two-run double to center field.
Perrucci (12-3) earned the win with four innings of one-run relief.
Young Harris had seven hits by seven different players in game two.
